Digestion: The North-to-South Journey to Wellness

Updated: Feb 19

In Nutritional Therapy, we have a saying: "You aren’t just what you eat; you are what you absorb." You could be eating the most expensive, organic, nutrient-dense diet in the world, but if your digestive system isn't functioning properly, those nutrients never actually make it to your cells. Digestion is a mechanical and chemical process that moves in one direction: North to South. This process must be optimized in a specific order; if you skip a step at the "North," every subsequent step downstream is impacted.

Why Your Digestive Health is Non-Negotiable

When your digestion is functioning optimally, it does so much more than just process food. It:

  • Extracts and absorbs vital nutrients for energy and repair.

  • Provides a massive immune barrier, housing roughly 70% of your immune system.

  • Facilitates waste removal and detoxifies the body.

  • Activates hormones and communicates directly with your central nervous system.

  • Maintains balance within your microbiome.

Dysfunction in the digestive tract can lead to a breakdown in these mechanisms, leaving us wondering why we feel "off" even when our diet is "perfect."

The 7 Stages of the North-to-South Process

  1. The Brain: Where It All Begins

Digestion begins in the brain with the thought, sight, and smell of food. Your brain tells the other organs to "turn on" digestive processes.

The Takeaway: Mindless or distracted eating means your body does not recognize it is being fed, failing to trigger the necessary enzymes and acids.

  1. The Mouth: Mechanical & Chemical Breakdown

In addition to mechanical chewing, saliva begins to chemically break down carbohydrates.

The Goal: Food should be a liquid consistency before swallowing. Ask yourself: Am I chewing enough?

  2. The Stomach: Disinfect & Dissolve

HCL (hydrochloric acid) and pepsin further break down food and kill any pathogens.

The Impact: Low stomach acid can lead to feelings of excessive fullness, constipation, or gut infections.

  3. The Liver & Gallbladder: The Fat-Burning Duo

The Liver produces bile to break down fats, while the Gallbladder stores and concentrates it for release.

The Signal: If this process is impaired, you may experience nausea after fatty meals, light-colored stools, and long-term fatty acid deficiencies.

  4. The Pancreas: The Enzyme Factory

The pancreas releases digestive enzymes to finish breaking down food and secretes bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid as it enters the small intestine.

The Risk: Without these enzymes, your body cannot effectively use the "raw materials" you are consuming.

  5. The Small Intestine: The Nutrient Gateway

This is where 90% of nutrient absorption occurs. It is also where the immune system screens for invaders.

The Connection: If bacteria overgrows here (often due to insufficient HCL or constant snacking), you may experience significant bloating and cramping.

  6. The Large Intestine: The Final Stage

The large intestine recycles water and minerals and houses trillions of microbes.

The Result: If food was not properly digested "up north," bacteria ferment it here, leading to gas and discomfort.

The Microbiome & The Gut-Brain Axis

This North-to-South journey isn't just a physical one; it’s a communication highway. The Gut-Brain Axis links your central nervous system with your enteric nervous system, primarily through the Vagus Nerve.

A healthy, diverse microbiome is essential for:

  • Neurotransmitter Production: Roughly 95% of your serotonin (the "feel-good" hormone) is produced in your gut. If your digestion is compromised, it can directly impact your mood, anxiety, and sleep.

  • The Stress Loop: Chronic stress damages the gut lining, while an imbalanced gut sends "alarm" signals to the brain, keeping you in a state of high stress, which means high cortisol.

  • Immune Education: Your microbiome "trains" your immune cells to know the difference between a friend (food) and a foe (pathogens).

Why "North-to-South" Matters Here: You can take all the probiotics in the world, but if you aren't breaking down food earlier in the process, undigested particles will ferment and feed the "bad" bacteria. A healthy microbiome starts with healthy stomach acid and bile flow.

How to Tell if Your Digestion Needs Support

When the process is disrupted, your body sends signals:

  • Bloating or gas shortly after eating

  • Acid reflux or a "heavy" feeling in the stomach

  • Undigested food in stool

  • Brain fog or low energy after meals

  • New or increasing food sensitivities

3 Simple Ways to Support Your Digestion Today

You don't always need a complex protocol to start feeling better. Try these NTP-approved habits:

  1. The 3-Breath Rule: Before you eat, take three deep, slow belly breaths to shift into a "rest and digest" state. This allows your body to focus resources on properly digesting and absorbing the incoming food.

  2. Hydrate Between Meals: Avoid drinking large amounts of water during your meal, which can dilute your stomach acid.

  3. Prioritize Bitter Foods: Foods like arugula or a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar in water can "prime the pump" for acid and bile production.

Targeted Support for the Journey

There is no magic pill for digestion, but sometimes our bodies just need a little extra support to get moving again. While food and lifestyle are the foundation, targeted supports can act as a bridge. A couple of my favorite digestive supports include:

  • Digestive Enzymes: To assist the pancreas in finishing the job.

  • HCL Support: To ensure the stomach can disinfect and break down proteins.

  • Liver & Gallbladder Support: To help produce and move high-quality bile for fat digestion and detox.

Because supplement quality and sourcing are vital to your results, I’ve partnered with Fullscript to provide you with professional-grade options you can trust. I strongly recommend avoiding third-party retailers like Amazon for supplements; without direct sourcing, there is often no way to verify storage conditions, expiration dates, or even the authenticity of the ingredients.
